My Classroom

My classroom is a resource room for kindergarten through 2nd graders. In this classroom, I work on direct reading, writing, and math instruction for students who have learning disabilities. My goal is to create an environment that is welcoming and encourages my students to try their hardest. My room is filled with visuals for my students to reference such as a word wall, anchor charts, a writing process chart, and a leveled classroom library.

See examples and explanations of the elements in my classroom below.

This is the "Welcome Center" where students can find supplies they will need (glue, scissors, crayons, tissues, etc). They are free to get these supplies on their own which adds to the ownership they feel in the classroom.

The carpet area is where a majority of our classes begin. The students know the routine is to come and sit in this area so that a mini-lesson can be taught, expectations can be reviewed, or relationships can be built.

Many of my students' IEP goals focus on learning sight words. To encourage and motivate them to do so, the students have an opportunity to earn "Sight Word Money". When they master a new sight word, they earn a "dollar" which they can spend in the "Sight Word Store" once a month.

Visuals are very important for my students in order for them to gain mastery in a subject. All around the room different visuals can be found such as these coin and place value posters. I purposely use bright colors and make the posters fun so the students are motivated to use them.

Additional visuals are displayed on the front board. This specifically shows out vocabulary board, shape posters, and some choice mentor texts. The students are encouraged to be hands on with these areas.

Our district uses Letterland as the main reading curriculum. As the resource teacher, I use the intervention strand to teach decoding skills. Many of these posters are rotated on this board depending on the current lesson.

While empty in this photo, the word wall is a very important element of my classroom. Words are added throughout the year as new sight words/ letter rules are learned. Students use this element while reading and writing on a daily basis.

The classroom library is one of my students' favorite parts of the classroom! It is leveled by reading level so the students can find "just right" books. There is also a wide selection of genres so each student can fall in love with reading!
